This recent workshop really came to life thanks to a chain of events that started at the WAATBP Keep It 100 pitch competition. That’s where I first met Professor LSJ and a few of her City College students, and it all grew from there. One of those students, Emma, took the initiative to organize a City College exclusive workshop through DSA, and that’s how we ended up bringing this session to life.
What stood out to me was seeing how much these students really wanted this to happen and how eager they were to learn. My main goal was to make sure everyone walked away feeling more confident behind the camera, whether they’re just exploring or thinking about going deeper into photography. We focused on the fundamentals, then got hands-on with lighting, letting them actually change modifiers and see the difference between a bare bulb, a softbox, and everything in between.
The vibe in the room was great because most of the students knew each other, and even though we had one extra guest show up from social media, it turned into a good learning moment about how to communicate who the workshop is for. Everyone got comfortable, and having a couple that already knew each other as models made it all flow smoothly.
What really made this special for me was seeing how a random connection turned into something meaningful. It reminded me why I started Frame of Mind Project in the first place: to create these opportunities and watch them grow. I’m excited about partnering more with City College because it’s right in my neighborhood, and I’d love to keep building those relationships and maybe even bring more students into my studio or head over to theirs.
After the workshop, we even did a quick fun video that might become part of a podcast or a recap they’re working on. It was a great reminder that sometimes as creatives we need that outside encouragement to know we’re on the right path.
